Who we are

Wanderlustria and Austria Wanderlust is the vision to offer DIY travellers the resources to plan their Austrian adventures without using expensive travel agents or tour operators. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge of Austria.

I am Tammy Ellis, the founder of the Austria Wanderlust Website and the CEO and Director of Wanderlustria eU (an established Austrian business). I launched the popular Austria Travel Planning website in January 2024 to share my passion for helping people discover my adopted homeland, Austria.

Tammy Ellis Founder and Chief Austria Wanderlust’er’

I am originally from Canada, studied in Vienna, and lived in Australia. I have returned to Austria and live in the beautiful Austrian Alps.

After 20+ years as a PhD cancer researcher and research administration professional, I realised that I was passionate about travel writing. So I decided to take a Gap Year (better late than never) and studied to reinforce my writing skills with qualifications in Copywriting and SEO.  My career been a twisty road and I am still excited to see where it leads.

Fast-forward a few years later, and we decided to move the family ‘back’ to Austria. So, there is one Austrian expat, one Canadian expat, and two Austrian-Australian teens.

We now live in an Austrian ski resort with our Austrian Golden Retriever puppy Aussie (yes, he is 40 kg, but always a puppy to me!), where we manage a successful Holiday Apartment management service, Austrian Alpine Getaways.

  • I am an avid traveller
  • I love living in Austria-and I explore throughout my adopted homeland
  • I have bucket-loads of first-hand advice for travelling to Austri

And I suffer from Wanderlust and have a serious case of Fernweh …“far-sickness” or a desire to travel, a longing for far-off places. (As well as a fondness for great German words)

The cure for these ‘ailments’ is Wanderlustria!

We look forward to sharing our wonderful Austrian experiences and beautiful places with other travellers.

    Fun Facts

I love living in the Austrian Alps. My Happy place is on top of an Austrian Mountain.  In Summer, I am amazed by the spectacular panoramas, and in winter, the sun shines as I swish down the slopes.

I am trying to improve my German Grammar and learn Pinzgauerisch (a dialect from the Alpine region south of Salzburg).

In the winter, I am the slowest skier in my family- even our dog is faster!

My demanding Office Manager/CEO (Chief Eating officer) is our golden retriever, Aussie. You can find me every morning (even in the rain and blinding snowstorms) out walking with our CEO. At least the views are great.

I am learning to be an Austrian cook  – my favourite Austrian dishes to cook are Pinzgauer Kasnocken and Kaiserschmarrn.

Claim to Fame:  Niki Lauda (the Austrian race car driver) almost collided with my car while I was driving my in-laws around the Viennese hills in late 1999.  It appeared that he still took the corners at 200 mph!

I’ve been close to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal:  Both kids play a lot of tennis (I have spent years at tennis courts).  One bonus is that Roger touched my hand, and I was so close to Rafa that I could have licked his face (I didn’t).  But I successfully got both their autographs for my kids.
