Austria’s Glacier Ski Resort Guide

Looking for a Ski Resort with extra long seasons? 

Snow sure with epic panoramic views at the top to the world?

Austria has seven glacier ski resorts, all at over 3000 metres (~9800 feet) altitude, where you can ski from at least October to late May/June.  There are five Glacier Ski Resorts in Tyrol, and one each in Salzburgerland and Carinthia.

Hintertux Glacier, Tirol

The Hintertux Glacier Ski Resort is located at the end of the Zillertal Valley.

It is the only ski resort in Austria open 365 days a year! 

The Hintertux Glacier (Hintertuxer Gletscher) Ski Resort has 64 km (40 mi) of slopes and is between 1500 and 3250 metres (4900 ft to 10.660 ft).

Skiers will find accommodations in Zell am Ziller, Ramsau im Zillertal, Mayrhofen and Finkenberg.

Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun in Salzburgerland

Kitzsteinhorn was Austria’s first glacier ski resort. The Glacier gondola starts from the village centre via the MK Maiskogelbahn and the 3K Kaprun-Kitzsteinhorn-Konnection.

The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski resort is open from mid-October to early June. It is situated between elevations of 768 and 3029 metres (2520-9940 ft) and has 61 km (38 mi) of slopes and 8.9 km of ski routes. Kitzsteinhorn has Austria’s biggest half-pipe, efficient lifts, a smaller family ski hill, and glorious views across to Großglockner and the entire Hohe Tauern National Park.

The Alpin Card lift pass for Kitzsteinhorn glacier also includes Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the nearby Ski Circus Ski Resort in Saalbach/Hinterglemm, Leogang, Fieberbrunn. Together, these have created one of the largest ski areas in Austria, with over 400 km (250 mi) of pistes.

Where to Stay in the Kitzsteinhorn Ski Resort

The village of Kaprun lies in the Kitzsteinhorn valley. There is a big selection of accommodation options in Kaprun where you are only a few minutes away from the Kaprun Centre and the Gondolas to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

Stubai Glacier, Tirol

The area of Neustift extends far to the Unterberg and to the upper mountain valley, and to the Stubai Glacier region.

The Stubai Glacier Ski Resort is between 1697 and 3212 metres (5570-10540 ft) high, with 68 km (42 mi) of slopes and 35 km (22 mi) of ski routes.

You can ski at the Stubai Glacier from October until June.

The beautiful Tyrolean village of Neustift im Stubaital is the perfect base to explore the Stubai Glacier.   

Sölden, Tirol

The Sölden Glacier ski resort is open from late September to early May. It is between 2675 and 3250 metres (8776 to 10662 ft) and has 34.3 km (21.31 mi) of slopes.

In addition, from Sölden, you also have access to the Big 3 mountains, for 146 km (91 mi) of pistes.

Sölden is also home to the  007 ELEMENTS  galleries, which highlight the 2015 James Bond film Spectre, which was filmed in Sölden. The Ice Q restaurant on the Gaislachkogl, located at 3048 m (10,000 ft), served as the Hoffler Klinik in the film.

Where to Stay in the Sölden Ski Resort

Sölden is in the Öztal Valley and is a typical Tyrolean village with many events, sights, and amenities.  The Zentral Shuttle Cable car valley station is directly in the centre of Sölden.

Bergland Design Wellnesshotel is a modern 5-star hotel with a rooftop spa area and outdoor pool. The hotel is in the centre of Sölden, right next to the Zentrum-Shuttle Cable Car. BOOK HERE

Pitztal Glacier, Tirol  

The Pitztal Glacier is Austria’s highest ski resort at 3,440 metres (11300 ft) located in the Pitztal Valley. You can ski at Pitztal from September to May. 

The Pitztal Glacier Ski Resort is between 2685 and 3440 metres (8810-11300 ft) and has 40 km (25 mi) of slopes. It is open from September until May.

Where to Stay in the Pitztal Glacier Ski Resort

Skiers will find accommodation in Sankt Leonhard im Pitztalm the largest town. Accommodation is also available in one of the 30 hamlets in the valley that stretches 25 km from Wiese to Schußlehn to Mittelberg.

Kauntertal Glacier, Tirol

The Kaunertal valley is located in the southern part of Tyrol on the border with Italy. From the town of Prutz, the valley is accessed starting at Feichten along the 28 km (17 mi) Kaunertal Glacier Road to the Kaunertal Glacier (Kaunertaler Gletscher)

The Kauntertal Glacier Ski Resort is between the elevations of 2150 and 3113 metres (7054 to 10,213 ft) with 58.6 km (36.5 mi) of slopes. You can ski at the Kauntertal Glacier from October until May.

Where to Stay in the Kauntertal Glacier Ski Resort

The Kaunertal Nature Park and Glacier Regions is made up of the villages of Fendels Kauns, Kaunerberg, Kaunertal.

Mölltaler Glacier, Carnithia 

The Mölltaler Glacier is in the Hohe Tauern National Park, only a few kilometres from the village of Flattach.

The Mölltal Glacier ski area is accessed via the longest underground funicular in the world, the 4827 m (3 mi) long Glacier Express, which takes 8 minutes to reach the ski area.

The Mölltal Glacier ski resort is open from mid-October to early June. The Ski Resort is situated between the elevations of 2,108 and 3,122 metres (6916 and 10,243 ft)  with 36 km (22 mi) of slopes.

Where to Stay in the Mölltal Glacier Ski Resort

The village of Flattach is in Spittal an der Drau District and is the best location to base yourself for skiing on the Mölltaler Glacier.
