Austria Public Transport Guide
Public transport is a popular and efficient way to get around Austria. The local network consists of trains, trams, and buses that will get you anywhere you want to go.
If you can’t get somewhere in Austria by train, there will be a connecting bus service from the railway station.
Within the cities there are buses and tramways. Vienna is the only city that has a metro (UBahn).
Most services are run by POSTBUS along with a few regional operators, including:
- Salzburgerland Salzburg Verkehr
- Tyrol Verkehrsverbund Tirol
- Upper Austria ÖOVV
- Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland VOR
- Styria Verbund Linien
- Carinthia Kärntner Linien
IMPORTANT TIP
Austria’s public transportation is barrier-free and operates on an honour system.
Tickets must always be purchased in advance, and you will be fined if you are caught without them.
- You can buy tickets in tobacco shops, at the stations, sometimes from the driver (Cash usually is required) and online.

- If you have a paper ticket, validate it before your first journey at the machines at the underground stations (Vienna) entrance or the front of buses and trams.
- Tickets bought directly on the bus or tram are automatically validated.
