Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Travelling on Westbahn Trains
Westbahn is a private train company, connecting Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Bregenz, Rosenheim and Munich.
Westbahn trains offer Economy (2nd class) , comfort class (Same seats as 2nd class, but more legroom & all seats are at large table) and 1st class. There are both upper & lower deck seats in all three classes. There’s free WiFi & all seats have power sockets.
Westbahn trains are double-decker coaches. If you are travelling with a lot of heavy suitcases, you may want to arrange your seat on the lower floor.
The trains have a Food Vending Area (machines) where you can buy snacks, drinks, tea & coffee with contactless bank cards.
IMPORTANT In Vienna, WESTbahn trains arrive and depart from the Vienna Westbahnhof station.

Booking Tickets
WESTbahn tickets are available:
- online
- in tobacco stores with terminals for ticket sales, in WESTshops
- onboard trains. Tickets purchased on board will include a surcharge of € 3,10.
Types of Tickets
WESTflexpreis: has the most flexibility- you can hop on the next WESTbahn train.
- Tickets at the WESTflexpreis fare are not personalised or train-bound.
- The WESTflex price is available online, in WESTshops (+ € 1,-), in selected tobacconists (+ € 2,-) or directly on the train (+ € 3,10,-).
WESTsuperpreis fare tickets are train-specific, subject to availability, and available in several price categories.
- Booking is possible from 90 days up to 1 minute before the scheduled departure. The earlier you book, the cheaper the price.
- The WESTsuperpreis fare is only available online and includes a complimentary seat reservation.
- Tickets are non-personalised and, therefore, transferable to other individuals.
- For an additional fee, a WESTsuperpreis tickets can also be used for travelling on another WESTbahn train on the selected travel day and route.
- A WESTsuperpreis ticket can be cancelled online until one day before the selected travel day for a fee of 25% (minimum 4.99 euros).
WESTvorteilspreis for everyone with a valid and personalised ÖBB Vorteilscard, a DB Bahncard, or any other valid European railway discount card (e.g., SBB Halb Tax, National Rail Railcard) or a disability card can save up to 50% on our WESTflexpreis
Children Tickets:
- Accompanied children under the age of 6 travel free of charge.
- For children up to the age of 15, you pay 2 euros per child per journey.
Seat Reservations
You can book a seat reservation for a specific train and change or cancel an existing seat reservation up to three hours before the train departure. This reservation is combinable with any ticket. When you choose a seat reservation, WESTbahn will allocate a seat to you. To change your seat reservation, you must sign up for a WESTbahn account. Reserved seats can be used by other passengers if they are not claimed within 15 minutes of departure.
Seat Classes
You will have a choice of three different classes
Economy Class (second class)
Comfort Class Upgrade: includes a comfortable reclinable leather seat at a table for four with increased legroom. Each seat comes with it’s own 220v powersocket.
Upgrade rates:
- For the routes (and any stop in between): Vienna <-> Salzburg, Salzburg <-> Munich, Salzburg <-> Innsbruck, Salzburg <-> Bregenz: € 7.90 p.p.
- For the routes: from Vienna beyond Salzburg, from Innsbruck beyond Salzburg, from Bregenz beyond Salzburg, from Munich beyond Salzburg: € 11.90 p.p.
First Class: a wider seat with more legroom, your personal reading lamp, our welcome greeting and seat service (where possible).
