Where to Stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a tiny town with only ~800 inhabitants and a few streets between the mountain and Hallstättersee (Lake Hallstatt). The buildings appear to be stacked upon themselves on the steep slopes of the Dachstein Mountains.

Hallstatt is split into Hallstatt Lahn, the location of the Salt Mine funicular, and the Old Town area, where most people prefer to stay.

Limited accommodations are available in Hallstatt. Reservations are essential—in the Summer High Season, accommodations are reserved 3-6 months in advance. 

Staying in Hallstatt Old Town tends to be more expensive.

Hallstatt Old Town (Altstadt)

Hallstatt Old Town is centred around the Marketplatz (Market Square) and is characterised by colourful buildings, churches, quaint alleyways, shops, and restaurants. All the idyllic photos of Hallstatt are of the Old Town.

 

Transportation:

No cars are allowed in the Old Town.  

Visitors must park at one of the designated parking spots outside the Old Town and walk, or guests staying at a Hallstatt accommodation can take the free bus to the Old Town.

The Ferry to/from the Train station jetty is in the Old Town.

  • Restaurants, Cafes and shops
  • Able to enjoy the village in the morning and evening before/after the day-trippers leave

TOP TIP: Look for a room with a balcony that overlooks the lake

 

Seehotel Grüner Baum

The hotel offers a panoramic lake view and is located directly on Marketplatz. The famous yellow hotel is in a historic 17th-century building that was the former residence of the imperial salt merchant was first mentioned in a document in 1700. There are four suites with large lakeside terraces and 25 double rooms, some of which have balconies with either lake or market square views.

The Seehotel Grüner Baum has a restaurant, bar and lake terrace which is the perfect place to enjoy a meal.

Heritage.Hotel  The 4-star hotel is encompassed in three townhouses.  Haus Kainz, the main building located on the jetty and has the breakfast room and wellness area. The 500-year old Stocker House, is a 3-minute walk from the main house and is Hallstatt’s oldest building. Seethaler House, perched on the hillside with magnificent lake views, is a 5-minute walk from the main house. The hotel has double rooms, suites and family suites (for up to 6 guests) and a restaurant.

Seewirt Zauner This hotel tucked into a corner of the picturesque market square,has been family-run for 150 years Some of the rooms at Seewirt Zauner offer private balconies with views of the town. The lake is just a short walk away. A complimentary breakfast is included.

Gasthof Simony 

Gasthof (Pension) Simony is in a 15th-century historic building located directly on the Marketplatz next to Seehotel Grüner Baum. Gasthof Simony offers panoramic views of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains. The rustic-style rooms feature wooden furniture and floors. Some of the rooms have shared bathrooms.  Gasthof Simony provides an Austrian buffet breakfast that you can eat on their beautiful lakeside Terrace.

Top Tip. We recommend booking the triple rooms (double bed + single bed) with ensuite and lakeside balcony.

Gasthof Weisses Lamm  The Weisses Lamm Inn is located close to the centre of Hallstatt, off the main road. Breakfast buffet and half-board a la carte dinner is available. The Inn has double rooms and suites- as well as a Penthouse Apartment with a kitchen and a 3-bedroom lake view apartment with a kitchen.

Pension Leopoldine  The rooms have either lake or mountain views. The cheapest rooms have shared bathrooms, but there are also rooms with private en-suite bathrooms. 

Hallstatt Lahn

Hallstatt Lahn is at the southern end of Hallstatt, approximately a 10-minute walk (650m or 0.5 mile) to the centre of Hallstatt.

Hallstatt Lahn is still close to all the sights but is more spacious and offers cheaper accommodations than the Old Town.

Transportation

It is possible to drive in Hallstatt Lahn.

The 543 and 544 Regional Bus Stops are in Hallstatt Lahn.

In the Summer, the Ferry stops in Lahn on a round-trip journey.

Best for:

  • Cheaper Accommodation
  • Close to the Salt Mine
  • If travelling by car- there is more of a chance the accommodation will provide parking.
  • Able to enjoy the village in the morning and evening before/after the day-trippers leave.

Boutiquehotel Garni Strand Hallstatt is an adults-only hotel in the centre of town, directly on the lake. The ten junior suites all feature lake views and balconies, a private beach, and parking.

Obertraun

Obertraun is located on the southern end of Lake Hallstatt, directly across from Hallstatt. Obertraun is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Region of the Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut.

Obertraun is directly on Lake Hallstatt and only has a population of ~750 people. The village is surrounded by nature with farms dotting the valley of the Dachstein Krippenstein Mountain.

By road, it is approximately 5 km to Hallstatt, and it is a ~6 min ride on Bus 544 to Hallstatt

Transportation

It is possible to drive in Obertraun.

Bus lines  542 and 543 stop in Obertraun, making it easy to travel to and from Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, and Gosau.

Bus stop “Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn” is located at the entrance of the valley station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable cars.

The trains from Salzburg and Vienna stop at the Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof, one stop after Hallstatt Bahnhst.

  • Can drive into Obertraun and many accommodations have onsite parking.
  • The Train station is directly in Obertraun
  • Location of the Dachstein Krippenstein – 5 Fingers lookout and Giant Ice Caves

Seehotel am Hallstättersee is located directly at the lake with panoramic views and impressive Dachstein Mountains. The hotel has rustic-style rooms with wooden furniture and floors, with some rooms with a balcony overlooking the lake or courtyard.  The hotel has a garden with a pool and a restaurant- Salzhafenstube, that serves traditional Austrian and International cuisine.

Dormio Resort has 82 luxury chalets, each with a balcony or terrace, a wood-burning stove, and solid wooden furniture. The chalets can accommodate 2-16 guests.  The resort has a swimming pool, a sports and wellness section, a restaurant, and a mini market.

Apartment House Seerose are self-catering holiday apartments close to the shore of Lake Hallstatt. It offers newly-renovated Single or double-bedroom apartments, each with a lounge/dining area and kitchen. Breakfast can be provided.

Bad Goisern

Bad Goisern is located ~12 km north of Hallstatt and ~10 km from Bad Ischl on the northern part of Lake Hallstatt.

Bad Goisern is a popular health/spa resort town and a Market Town with a population of ~8000 people. The town is in the valley with rugged mountains , fields and meadows.

Transportation

Being between Bad Ischl and Hallstatt there are many transportation options.

From Bad Ischl, take Bus 541 in the direction Gosausee to  bus stop “Bad Goisern Mitte”

To Hallstatt: It is an ~30-minute bus ride. Take Bus 541 to Hallstatt Gosaumühle, then switch to Bus 543 to Hallstatt Lahn.

There are four train stations in Bad Goisern. From Vienna/Linz/Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim, change to train to Stainach-Irdning.

Best for:

  • Cheaper Accommodation and more options
  • Bigger town with more restaurants and shops
  • Not as many international Tourists- mostly popular with Austrian and German visitors.
  • It is not as busy as Hallstatt, but it is still close.
  • Holidays with a car.

Hotel Moserwirt has been established since 1686 and offers single, double and junior suites. The hotel has a wellness area with swiss stone pine sauna, and a natural pool. There is an on-site restaurant with a beer garden. A buffest breakfast and free soft drinks, coffee and cake in the afternoon is included.

Wellness Hotel Goiserer Mühle This 4-star hotel, built in 1551, lies directly by the romantic babbling Mühlbach (mill stream) in the gardens of Bad Goisern spa. The hotel provides a breakfast buffet, and there is also a casual restaurant, a cafe/bar, and a terrace. The spa has a sauna, a steam bath, and a solarium.

Hotel Lindwurm The family-run hotel is located in the centre of Bad Goisern. The Lindwurm Hotel offers a spa area with an indoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and a restaurant.

Landhotel Agathawirt: The property dates from the beginning of the 16th century. The traditional hotel has been family-run for over 200 years. The hotel are located in a modern wing and offers single, double, triple, and family rooms. The Restaurant serves seasonal and regional Austrian cuisine.
